Predecessors to the ASB
The Affiliated States of Boreoamerica grew out of many institutions from the colonial era. In the dangerous multipolar environment of eastern North America, different actors - imperial, creole, native, mixed - made alliances and connections in order to survive and to further their own interests. A web of shared institutions came to encompass half the continent, eventually being given the name ASB. This page lists the most important institutions that were woven together to form the confederation's fabric.
The Children Of Onontio
An alliance between the Governor of Canada, who was called Onontio, and the villages of the Upper Country and Huronia.
The Covenant Chain
An alliance between New Netherland and Iroquoia, including the Iroquois dependencies in the south in Poutaxia and Allegheny.
The Council of Three Fires
The Three Fires Council organized the three main tribes of the Anishinaabe ethnic group: the Ottawa, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi. Oral tradition dates its founding to the year 796, which would make it even older than the Iroquois. The council helped set the context for the mixing and meeting of peoples in the Upper Country and Ohio and provided a counterweight to the Children of Onontio. The Council still exists as a formal body, but its alliance structure long ago was folded into the ASB.
The Congress for the West Indies
A council for discussion of joint affairs of the French and Spanish colonies along the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Original members were the governors of Louisiana, Saint Domingue, San Domingo, and Cuba.
The Anglo-American Congress
Originally this Congress was a group for managing the relations between the English colonies and the Iroquois. Upon the revolution of some of the colonies, it became a forum for discussing a range of issues common to the loyalist and republican states.
The Congress of the Nations
The result of the merger of the Anglo-American Congress and the Congress of the West Indies, together with the allied members of the Great Lakes alliances. The idea of a single Congress that would include and supersede all of these bodies came about gradually, and as late as the 1840s regional Congresses continued to meet. But the Congress of the Nations, in its final form, was the first institution for governing the entire ASB.
The Chiefly Council
A gathering of landowners and chiefs intended to represent the interests of the ASB's upper class.
